The Nervous System

Hello Health students,

Below are a couple of very helpful images to guide you through your Nervous System Drawing assignment, which is due the next time our class period meets (Tuesday the 31st for all periods except 1st, which will meet Wednesday, April 1).

Be sure to click on the images to expand them for greater detail.

Good luck!

Cafe Nutritional Fact Sheet Project

Hello Health students!

I am very excited, because today begins the Nutritional Fact Sheet Project for our very own cafeteria! We will be providing the entire high school with caloric information of the foods they eat each day, and that is a very great thing.

Here are the details of the project:

- Classes will be divided into groups of four students (you will have control over who is in your group).

- Each group will choose 4 different, unlabeled food items to research for the project, calculating the number of calories in the serving provided by the cafe.

- Each individual within the group will be held responsible for 1 of the items chosen. So, even though this is a group project, there is an individual component as well.

- The calories of the ingredients used for each specific item will be required, so make sure and keep such data handy.

- Once the items are researched, they will be presented in print form, a blueprint of which will be posted on the blog this week.

- Grading will focus on accuracy, presentation, and individual participation.

- The project is due Wednesday, April 8.

Be sure to start gathering your data asap so that you may begin calculating the number of calories in the items that you choose with enough time to check and recheck your results with me BEFORE the due date. And as always, if you have any questions, please let me know!

Good luck!

The 4th Quarter

Hello Health students!

Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope that you enjoyed your time off and that you return rejuvenated and ready to go, because have a lot to do and a lot to cover this quarter.

We will be starting this week with a look at the central nervous system, and working our way to a more in-depth and specific look at the brain. Once we have a general understanding of the organ's anatomy, we will move to behavior and a very important chemical called dopamine.

Project-wise, we will see at least 3 projects this quarter, the first of which will be announced in-class and here on the blog at the end of this week.

Again, welcome back, and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask!

Have a Great Break!

Hello Health students!

Congratulations on completing the first section of Health. We have only one Quarter remaining, but we still have much to do.

When we reconvene at the end of March, we will look at our final organ system, the Central Nervous System. We leave that for last because it serves as a wonderful transition into behavior, a very important characteristic of Health.

In the meantime, enjoy your Spring Break, stay safe, and make healthy decisions. See you in about a week!

Organ Systems Review

Hello Health students!

Below is a link to the Organ Systems review. It will list the items that we have covered in class, along with a detailed image of the digestive system (which we did not cover in great detail during lecture.

If you have any questions during your studies, please let me know. And good luck!

Musculoskeletal System Drawing

Hello Health students!

Below is an image that will guide you through your current assignment - the musculoskeletal system drawing. Remember, these images you produce may be used on the upcoming exam if they are turned in on-time, so take great care in completing them!

New Column Category

Hello Health students!

If you look to the right, you will notice that there is a new column category that will help to make your scholastic organization just a bit easier... for Health class, anyway.

"Active Assignments" will detail what work you should be currently engaged in, and needs to be completed very soon. I'm sure that many of you will appreciate this little item as you learn to responsibly keep track of your assignments.

Enjoy!

Respiratory System Video

Hello Health students!

Here is a great and informative video detailing the respiratory system. Take a good look, and be sure to reference the soon-to-be posted review for more information on what will be covered on the exam.

Good luck!

Circulatory System Animation

Hello Health students!

Below is a great web-animation displaying the workings of the circulatory system. It does a fairly good job describing the flow of blood and how the heart initiates this flow. Keep close attention to the details, as they are fair game for the examination. And if you have any questions at all, please let me know!

Enjoy!

The Respiratory System

Hello Health students!

Below is a nice reference image for the second part of your homework assignment, which is due the next time we meet. It depicts the respiratory system, and does a good job giving general details on some key features we will be discussing. Just as with the circulatory image posted earlier, use this image as a guide as you compose your drawing.

Good luck!

Circulatory System

Hello Health students!

Below is a fairly informative image detailing the circulatory system (click on it to enlarge). We will cover what you need to know in class during lecture, but for now, use it as a guide for your circulatory system drawing.

Enjoy!

Circulatory and Respiratory Systems

Hello Health students!

I hope that you have enjoyed the weekend and are ready for a week that we will spend closing out the topic of organ systems! Tomorrow, Tuesday March 17, we will finish the circulatory and respiratory systems (cardiothoracic systems), followed by the musculo-skeletal and reproductive systems on Wednesday.

Tonight, your homework is to compose a drawing of the circulatory and respiratory systems, complete with basic structures and identification. These drawings will serve as an introduction to you, and your main priority should be to familiarize yourself with the parts involved.

Each should be completed on a separate sheet of un-ruled paper and ready to turn in first thing on Tuesday. And remember, the more effort put into these drawings, the more credit you get!

Good luck!

Digestion - An Artist's Perspective

Hello Health students!

For your homework tonight, I would like for you to DRAW the digestive system. That's right -- draw it -- using colored pencils, or just a simple pencil. I want to see all of the different organs in the system connected how you currently "see" and understand them. An easy way to think about this is to draw the pathway that food takes through out bodies.

Please be sure to use un-lined paper for this assignment. It is due Thursday.

Good luck!

Poster Project Days -- Monday and Tuesday

Hello Health students!

Due to a mix-up on my calendar that put Spring Break one week earlier than it is actually scheduled for, I have decided to hold an extra Poster Day on Monday, March 9. This change, coupled with Tuesday's Poster Day, will give you plenty of in-class time to refine your project before Wednesday's due date. And remember, you have had one month to plan this project, and over two weeks to actually work on it, so I have very high expectations and will not be grading lightly!

Also, keep in mind that participation is a big part of the grade you will receive.

Good luck!
