Progress Reports

Hello Health students!

After careful consideration, I have decided to send progress reports home early this quarter. Many of you are struggling with handing in assignments on time or even at all, and I want to make sure that we get a handle on the problems causing these issues before it is too late.

If you have any questions at all, please let me know.

The Drug Report - Meth and Alcohol part II

Hello Health students!

We are fast approaching the end of our first section of the drug report. I applaud you for your resilience as we take in all of the statistical information and detail!

Your assignment tonight is to complete the two worksheets linked below. The first considers the prevalence and effect of alcohol, while the second looks at methamphetamine. Both are due AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS tomorrow.

Also, come prepared for a short quiz on the methamphetamine material covered in the website link provided in the assignment directions.

Good luck!

The Drug Report - Alcohol

Hello Health students!

Below, you will find a link to our second Drug Report, which covers alcohol prevalence, and other statistics. Read the following website carefully, and be prepared for a QUIZ tomorrow on the topics covered, and to complete a worksheet IN-CLASS, similar to the one we did for nicotine.

I strongly suggest printing out the web page and bringing it to class tomorrow to help make your work much easier.

Good luck with your studies, and let me know if you have any questions.

Project MAD

Hello Health students!

As we move from studying the healthy individual to a more public health-oriented section of our Health class, we shift a little bit of focus towards community service and issue awareness.

Today, we begin our 3rd project, Project MAD (Make A Difference). It will start with the following tasks:

1) Choose an issue you believe the general public needs to be more aware of--it can be local, or global (but I prefer local for the sheer fact that it makes your work easier).

2) Choose an item that you will make and sell in order to make money in the name of the issue you have chosen.

3) Choose a group or organization that you will donate the money to for the benefit of your issue.

As we move further along the time line of this project, we will vote on the best idea amongst all Health students, and work to make that specific plan happen.

Start thinking and gathering information now, folks. This project works in the background, so it is YOUR responsibility to get things done.

Good luck, and have fun with it!

A Slight Change of Schedule

Hello Health students!

After yesterday's wonderful chapel presentation by the organization Invisible Children, and seeing how just one person can make such a huge impact on a serious social and health issue, I think it necessary to spend a class period talking about it and how it applies to us.

So, instead of beginning the drug topics today, we will do a PR in-class on the chapel from yesterday and work on nicotine and alcohol tomorrow. We should be able to fit this discussion in without losing any class time before the next exam (which is coming next week), so it works very well this way.

Have a great day!

Posters Project Grades

Hello Health students!

The Poster Project is done and graded! You will begin seeing your scores for the project appearing online Wednesday evening, after individual grades are calculated and recorded.

YES, you heard me right! INDIVIDUAL grades! After much observation and thought, I've decided that it is only fair to grade participants based on their singular performances over the past 3 project days. The group grade still serves a purpose, however, and will represent the MAXIMUM grade each individual in the group can receive.

Also, with these changes to the grading process, the prize of a free lunch will now be awarded to the group that has the highest average grade amongst it's members.

Posters will be displayed in the back of the Health room, for your viewing pleasure.

Great job, everyone!

Calorie Counting Make-Up Resumes Wednesday

Hello again Health students!

For those of you looking to make-up your Calorie Counting checks, keep the following information in mind:

- Your calorie documentation will be graded with this Wednesday, November 12, as the starting point.

- Calorie Counting Checks will shortly follow.

- You will only need to make-up the number of checks that you wish to improve, out of the three that we completed (i.e., if you received two great checks last quarter, all you need is to make up one check this quarter).

If you have any questions at all, please let me know!

Poster Project Progress

Hello Health students!

I am seeing quite a bit of good work involving the current Poster Project that showcases the creativity of our Health classes as a group. Keep in mind as you work that this is a 200 point project, and that every group member should be involved in the construction of your presentation. I look forward to seeing the completed projects on Friday for periods 1 and 4, and on Monday for periods 5 and 7. Keep up the good work!

Your PP grades will be distributed on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
