Extra Credit Article

Hello Health students!

Happy Holidays!

For your reading pleasure, here is an article recently published in Time magazine, called "Why We Take Risks-It's the Dopamine." All you need to do is read it, and come prepared to discuss it when we meet next week--a way to ease us back into our daily scholastic routine.

I hope you all are enjoying your time off. See you all very soon!

Exam Tomorrow

Hello Health students!

I hope your day is going well and that you are ready for a quick and easy review for your upcoming exam.

All you need to do in terms of studying for tomorrow's Drug Exam is to review the "Big 3," which we covered in class and on the worksheets. What are the "Big 3," you ask? Nicotine, Alcohol, and Methamphetamine.

The links to the worksheets that you have already completed will prove VERY helpful in studying for the exam. Infact, I highly suggest that you take a look at the information on those worksheets and on the websites mentioned in them as you study.

If you have any questions whatsoever, please email me. Even though I am not in town, I am still on call on the eve of an exam!

Good luck!

Extra Credit Opportunity

Hello Health students!

Congratulations on completing the section on drug statistics and use. While the busy work is done, keep in mind that we do have an exam covering this material coming up this week! Do not worry--we will have a detailed review to help prepare you.

In the meantime, here is an extra credit opportunity for you.

I want you to tell me what a Schedule I classification for a drug is, what it means, and at least 5 examples of such drugs. This should be no longer than a half page, be type-written, and is due on Tuesday, December 9.

That's it! If you have any questions, please let me know.

Here is the link to the final set of questions for your Drug Report. Good luck scouring the web for the information!

Small Change of Plans

Hello Health students!

After a little bit of consideration, I believe it best for all of us, as a class, to discuss the drug list that will consist of your report choices tomorrow during class. I do not wish for any one person to have their expectations fall short, and discussing our options in person should help with that greatly.

So, enjoy the rest of your evening, and come prepared to class tomorrow, ready to make your decision there.

The Week Ahead

Hello Health students!

I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving Break! But now that it is over, I hope that you are not too tired from all of the tryptophan that you consumed*, and that you are prepared to get working once again.

This week, we will be finishing up The Drug Report by choosing a single drug from a list of many, and reporting on it in the same way we reported on nicotine, alcohol, and methamphetamine. The list will be posted this afternoon, and you should have your choice ready for me to clear at our next meeting.

The worksheet you will fill out will be made available to you on Tuesday, right here on the blog, so make sure that you check back accordingly to get it printed out and completed before it's due date on Thursday.

Once we are finished with The Drug Report, we will begin on the topic of sex, and discuss the psychological/chemical drive fueling the behavior, and mental and physical issues that may arise from engaging in the behavior. Beware, this will be quite graphic, especially when we study sexually transmitted diseases, so if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know ahead of time.

Welcome back!

*Tryptophan is an amino acid that is found in turkey and is suggested to make you feel tired upon its consumption.

Progress Reports

Hello Health students!

After careful consideration, I have decided to send progress reports home early this quarter. Many of you are struggling with handing in assignments on time or even at all, and I want to make sure that we get a handle on the problems causing these issues before it is too late.

If you have any questions at all, please let me know.

Hello Health students!

We are fast approaching the end of our first section of the drug report. I applaud you for your resilience as we take in all of the statistical information and detail!

Your assignment tonight is to complete the two worksheets linked below. The first considers the prevalence and effect of alcohol, while the second looks at methamphetamine. Both are due AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS tomorrow.

Also, come prepared for a short quiz on the methamphetamine material covered in the website link provided in the assignment directions.

Hello Health students!

Below, you will find a link to our second Drug Report, which covers alcohol prevalence, and other statistics. Read the following website carefully, and be prepared for a QUIZ tomorrow on the topics covered, and to complete a worksheet IN-CLASS, similar to the one we did for nicotine.

I strongly suggest printing out the web page and bringing it to class tomorrow to help make your work much easier.

Good luck with your studies, and let me know if you have any questions.

Project MAD

Hello Health students!

As we move from studying the healthy individual to a more public health-oriented section of our Health class, we shift a little bit of focus towards community service and issue awareness.

Today, we begin our 3rd project, Project MAD (Make A Difference). It will start with the following tasks:

1) Choose an issue you believe the general public needs to be more aware of--it can be local, or global (but I prefer local for the sheer fact that it makes your work easier).

2) Choose an item that you will make and sell in order to make money in the name of the issue you have chosen.

3) Choose a group or organization that you will donate the money to for the benefit of your issue.

As we move further along the time line of this project, we will vote on the best idea amongst all Health students, and work to make that specific plan happen.

Start thinking and gathering information now, folks. This project works in the background, so it is YOUR responsibility to get things done.

Good luck, and have fun with it!

A Slight Change of Schedule

Hello Health students!

After yesterday's wonderful chapel presentation by the organization Invisible Children, and seeing how just one person can make such a huge impact on a serious social and health issue, I think it necessary to spend a class period talking about it and how it applies to us.

So, instead of beginning the drug topics today, we will do a PR in-class on the chapel from yesterday and work on nicotine and alcohol tomorrow. We should be able to fit this discussion in without losing any class time before the next exam (which is coming next week), so it works very well this way.

Have a great day!

Posters Project Grades

Hello Health students!

The Poster Project is done and graded! You will begin seeing your scores for the project appearing online Wednesday evening, after individual grades are calculated and recorded.

YES, you heard me right! INDIVIDUAL grades! After much observation and thought, I've decided that it is only fair to grade participants based on their singular performances over the past 3 project days. The group grade still serves a purpose, however, and will represent the MAXIMUM grade each individual in the group can receive.

Also, with these changes to the grading process, the prize of a free lunch will now be awarded to the group that has the highest average grade amongst it's members.

Posters will be displayed in the back of the Health room, for your viewing pleasure.

Great job, everyone!

Calorie Counting Make-Up Resumes Wednesday

Hello again Health students!

For those of you looking to make-up your Calorie Counting checks, keep the following information in mind:

- Your calorie documentation will be graded with this Wednesday, November 12, as the starting point.

- Calorie Counting Checks will shortly follow.

- You will only need to make-up the number of checks that you wish to improve, out of the three that we completed (i.e., if you received two great checks last quarter, all you need is to make up one check this quarter).

If you have any questions at all, please let me know!

All Poster Products Complete

Hello Health students!

Today is the last day we will be working on the Poster Projects! Congratulations on completing a very important part of the class, and in short time too! Your grades for the project will be available on Wednesday, November 12, and they will also be displayed in the Health classroom for you all to see.

Also, as we enjoy the works of yours and your classmates, we will be moving straight into the Drug Report assignment, which will be introduced early this week. Calorie-counting make-up information is also incoming, so stay tuned!

The Drug Report

Hello Health students!

Your first report is upon us!

The Drug Report is an assignment that will see you detail information on a specific drug. You will have a list of drugs to choose from, and a number of questions you will need to have answered in your report will be provided to you as well.

Sign up sheets will be presented to you during the week of Nov. 10.

Good luck!

Poster Project Progress

Hello Health students!

I am seeing quite a bit of good work involving the current Poster Project that showcases the creativity of our Health classes as a group. Keep in mind as you work that this is a 200 point project, and that every group member should be involved in the construction of your presentation. I look forward to seeing the completed projects on Friday for periods 1 and 4, and on Monday for periods 5 and 7. Keep up the good work!

Your PP grades will be distributed on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Project Active

Hello Health students!

Congratulations on completing the first Quarter of Health 08-09! Your Calorie Counting project is complete and your grades will be available to view this Friday. Remember, however, that while a report will be created and discussed at Parent-Teacher Conferences, your Health grade is continuously measured throughout the Semester, so don't get too comfortable just yet!

If you find that you need some extra help in improving your Health grade, please consider Project Active, which we have discussed several times in class (as the Running Project). Here is what you will need to do:

1) Choose light cardiovascular (heart and respiration-focused) exercises to engage in. These include swimming, running, jogging, jump-roping, etc.

2) Take part in them for 10 minutes a day, 3 days a week.

3) Create a record of your activity, similar in structure to the Calorie Counting Project, but with the following information:

- Date
- Activity
- Duration
- Distance (when applicable)

This will be worth 100 points of extra credit if complete and structured properly. And remember, even if you miss a day or a week, keep up the documentation--you can get partial extra credit for whatever you do!

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Health Review Sheet

Hello Health Students!

Success! The good people at Blogger have figured out what the XML issue was that was preventing you from seeing October posts. Sadly, in fixing the problem, they were unable to salvage the posts, and they are lost forever.

What is NOT lost forever, however, is this review sheet. Click on the link below and happy studying for tomorrow's exam!

This Week in Health

Hello Health students!

First, I want to wish you well on your exam this week. It covers the basic neuroanatomy and behavior that we have been covering and for which you should be well prepared for. I look forward to seeing how everyone does!

Later this week, after the exam, we will talk a little bit about the topic of motivation, and ask ourselves the question, "why do people get started doing risky behaviors in the first place?" It is a look inward, to who we are, and we will hopefully learn a little bit about ourselves in the process.

Also, we will see another Project Day this week that will give you time to construct your posters for the Poster Project. And don't forget to bring your project books to class this week (hint, hint)!

Good luck, and see you all very soon!

Health Project 2 - The Poster Project

Hello Health students!

Your second major Health project is upon us! The Poster Project begins today, and over time will see you produce a poster displaying your health message for all the campus to see!

In class today, you chose your group members (4 members per group) and discussed a potential topic and specific health-based message your group will work with. You also outlined your topic and approach, and submitted it for approval.

Beginning next week, we will be putting the finishing touches on your topics and will begin work on the actual posters themselves.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

- This is a chance to be creative, so take advantage of it!

- The posters will be 24" x 36" in size.

- A blank poster will be made available to you, but you will need to provide what other materials you may need.

- You can use print-outs, cut-outs, pictures, drawings, etc, to make your poster unique and exciting!

- We will have "Poster Days," or time set aside to work on your posters with your group in-class.

- The tentative due dates will be 4 weeks from this upcoming Monday.

If you have any questions, please let me know! And remember, there is a lot of potential to be had with this project, so have fun with it!

Schedule Adjustment

Hello Health students!

Due to the revised testing schedule next week, we will be moving the lectures on behavior to the following week and setting up the Poster and Running projects this week and next. I think this new schedule will make for a much more relaxed testing environment.

Good luck!

Announcements

Hello Health students!

Congratulations on completing the first Health exam of the year! Grades will be made available Wednesday, after those who were away for the football tournament have had an opportunity for a make-up.

Here are just a couple of announcements to keep in mind as we progress into more personal health content:

- The Calorie Counting Project will extend to the end of the 1st Quarter instead of through the end of the Semester.

- Information on the Running Project will be posted this Friday.

- The Health Poster project will also be introduced soon.

"Super Size Me" Worksheet Preview

Hello Health students!

Welcome back. I hope that you enjoyed the long weekend! We're going to get right back into things now that we have all returned, so I hope you're ready!

Below is a link to the questions you can expect to find on the "Super Size Me" worksheet we will be filling out later this week. Take a look at, and when doing so, keep in mind that while it looks very substantial, we will be talking about the movie in great detail in-class, so it is much less work than it seems to be.

We will be finishing up the film, completing the worksheet, and reviewing the material we have covered over the past two weeks as we prepare for Friday's exam. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

CalorieLab

Hello Health students!

CalorieLab is a wonderful website that can prove helpful to many of you looking for more calorie-counting resources. It provides nutritional information for popular foods and restaurants. The site covers quite a bit of data, so you should be able to cover what you're looking for.

REMEMBER, this project is not meant to be difficult and does not require a large investment of your time. Use the resources on this blog to help you along your way and to keep things as simple as possible!

Also, remember that you are only accounting for the calories you are consuming. You SHOULD NOT be eating less or eating more based upon the numbers you are observing. You are only counting calories, and nothing more. Good luck!

Movie: Super Size Me

Hello Health students!

Today, we will be starting the award-winning documentary "Super Size Me," which takes a close and personal look at the obesity epidemic from the perspective of a man who eats nothing but McDonald's menu items 3 times a day for one whole month.

There will be a worksheet to complete, based on the information presented, at the close of the film next week. Also, the film material is fair game for the exam next Friday, so keep that in mind as you watch!

Calorie Counting: Estimation

Hello Health students!

A quick word regarding your Calorie Counting project: it's okay to estimate!

When you are unable to find the exact caloric value of the foods that you are eating, consider what you know about the ingredients and serving size, and take an educated guess. Estimating in this way will ensure not only that you will do well on your project, but that you will be reinforcing a positive behavior that will help you live a long and healthy life!

To help you out a littie, in the column to the right is a very useful Calorie Calculator that you can use to create a rough estimation of the caloric content of the foods you are eating. You it wisely, and you will do extremely well!

And remember, making an educated guess is NOT making numbers up. Don't sell yourself and your health short, and do the best you can in being as accurate as possible.

If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know!

"Super Size Me"

Hello Health students!

Today we received a good sampling of what to expect from the movie we will be watching in class tomorrow, "Super Size Me." If you missed it, the film is a documentary that follows the life of it's director as he partakes in a diet consisting only of McDonald's fast food menu items.

His experimental eating behavior and resulting metamorphosis ties perfectly into our studies on obesity, and should get you thinking deeply about the cause of our nation's over-weight epidemic.

When we finish the film next week, there will be a worksheet to for you to complete on Wednesday. So as you watch, please give the film your undivided attention. It may not be a bad idea to take notes while you watch!

If you missed the video clips we watched in-class today, or would like to see them again, they can be found below. Enjoy!

Obesity Facts and Statistics

Hello Health students!

Whew, we covered a lot of information in class today, didn't we? Congratulations on handling it all so very well. It was great to engage in such meaningful discussion, and I hope you look forward to more of them as I do.

Below are links to a couple of websites that contain some very important information (hint: that means they contain likely test material!). Take a quick look through them now, and you'll notice that the information is quite familiar, as we have already discussed them in class. Once you receive your review sheets for next week's examination, you'll definitely want to give the sites attention once again, so keep their URLs handy.

Good luck studying!

Health Project 1 - Calorie Counting

Hello Health students!

Today, we will be talking about your first major project this semester, the Calorie Counting project. It is an ongoing procedure, meaning that it will be continued throughout the term and have due dates or checkpoints at the end of every week.

You will need a Composition Book for this project, with your name and period on the front and inside cover. For any amount of food you eat each day, you will write down the time of consumption, the type of food, and the number of calories consumed based on the number of servings you had to eat.

Entries should look similar to this:

8/26

7:15 a.m.

Bagel...............................140 calories
Cream Cheese..................200 calories
Orange Juice.....................160 calories

12:30 p.m.

Del Taco #4......................1520 calories

5:45 p.m.

In-&-Out
Double-Double..................670 calories
Chocolate Shake...............690 calories

3380 total calories on the day

This should be done DAILY, EVERY DAY, AND THROUGH THE WEEKEND. Points will be rewarded at the end of each week for completeness.

And remember, this project is for YOUR benefit above all else. Be as careful and complete as possible so that you can accurately measure your eating habits--a very important part of a healthy lifestyle!

Good luck, and if you have any questions, please let me know!

Welcome!

Hello Health students!

Welcome to another year of school here at LLA! To those of you who are returning, welcome back! And for those of you that are new to the school this year, hello and welcome--it's good to have you with us!

For many of you, this class will serve as your introduction to specific health-related topics and issues that apply to your everyday life. As the class progresses through the semester, we will be covering a great deal of information pertaining to individual/personal health, social health, and public/community health. The information is substantial, and it is my goal this year to help you all to see just how important these matters truly are, not just later in life, but right here, and right now.

If you are worried because it sounds like a difficult task, don't stress! This class will be challenging, but keep in mind that you have a great deal of resources to consider! This blog, for example, will play a vital role in your day-to-day studies and is here to help you stay organized along the way. Be sure to check it daily for updates, assignments, and course documents, which will be posted regularly. Infact, you can see the Course Syllabus linked in the column to the right, for example.

Also, to help deal with any questions you may have, feel free to email me anytime and I will respond as soon as I can. Keep in mind that the sooner you email me, the better chance you have of receiving a response in a timely manner. In other words, don't wait until after dark to send me your questions!

I am confident that with some effort, you can all do very well. I look forward to seeing the challenges we face as a health-seeking community together, and I hope you do too.

Welcome to LLA Health, 2008-2009!
